Why Hammamet excursions with a private driver beat doing it alone

Hammamet sits in the middle of the Tunisian coast. As a result, the country’s great Roman, Punic and Islamic sites are all within about 2.5 hours by road. However, louages (shared minibuses), trains and rental cars turn that into a puzzle of timetables, tolls and parking. Our Hammamet excursions remove the puzzle: a driver meets you in the lobby at 08:00, waits at every stop and drops you at the same door at the end of the day.

History excursions from Hammamet: UNESCO sites in a day

Most travellers come for the ruins, and Tunisia has some of the best in the Mediterranean. Each Hammamet Excursion day pairs two or three sites that sit close together, so you spend more time walking and less time in the car.

Upper tiers and arena of the El Jem Roman amphitheatre, a day trip from Hammamet
El Jem held about 35,000 spectators in the 3rd century.

Kairouan and El Jem

This is the day most people remember. You start at the Great Mosque of Kairouan, founded in 670 and one of the oldest in North Africa, then walk the medina souks. After lunch, you drive 45 minutes through olive groves to the El Jem amphitheatre, where you can go down into the tunnels under the arena. See the full plan on the Kairouan and El Jem day trip page.

Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the Tunis medina

Carthage and Sidi Bou Said sit about ten minutes apart, so one morning covers both. The full day adds the covered souks of the Tunis medina. Meanwhile, the half day has you back at your hotel by 12:45. Details are on the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour page.

Dougga and Bulla Regia

Dougga is the best-kept small Roman town in North Africa, with a capitol, a theatre and whole streets of houses on a hillside. Bulla Regia adds villas built underground to escape the heat, with mosaics still in place. It is the longest day, so we leave at 07:30. Read more about the Dougga and Bulla Regia tour.

Coast, mountain and family trips from Hammamet

Not every day needs a ruin. These hammamet day trips are shorter, lighter on walking and good for a rest day between two big ones.

Sunset over a small cove on the Korbous coast, Cap Bon peninsula

Cap Bon

The Cap Bon tour is a loop around the peninsula north of Hammamet. You see the fort of Kelibia, the Punic town of Kerkouane, the sea caves of El Haouaria and the hot springs of Korbous. Pack a swimsuit, because there are two good places to swim.

Crenellated stone walls and round watchtower of the Sousse ribat

Sousse and Monastir

Sousse is about 1 h 15 south, and once you are there the stops sit close together, so this full day has very little driving between sights. You walk the Sousse medina and its ribat, then see the Monastir ribat and the seafront. It works well as a first day, since it shows you Tunisia at an easy pace.

Stone houses of the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia near Zaghouan

Zaghouan and Friguia Park

Zaghouan pairs the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia with the Roman Temple of Waters, the start of the aqueduct that once fed Carthage. Friguia Park, on the other hand, is a half day of giraffes, zebras and bird shows, about 30 minutes from Hammamet.

Prices for Hammamet excursions: per car, not per person

You pay one fixed price for the whole vehicle, so the more of you there are, the cheaper each seat gets. For example, the Kairouan and El Jem day costs €90 for up to four people, which is €22.50 each. Fuel, tolls and parking are included. Entry tickets are not, and they usually cost around 12 dinars per site.

Private driver or hotel coach tour?

Coach tours sold at hotel desks look cheaper per head. However, the gap closes fast once you are two or more, and the day itself is very different. Here is what actually changes.

Practical tips before you go

A few small things make Hammamet excursions much easier, especially in summer. That said, none of them need planning weeks ahead.

  • Best season

March to May and September to November bring 18 to 28 °C. In July and August, an 08:00 start matters.

  • Dress code

Cover shoulders and knees for the Great Mosque of Kairouan and near the Zitouna Mosque in Tunis.

  • Shoes

Wear closed shoes for Dougga, Carthage and the cobbled medinas.

  • Cash

Bring small dinar notes for tickets, tea and lunch. Cards rarely work at the sites.

  • Water and sun

El Jem, Kerkouane and Dougga have little shade. Bring a hat and 1.5 litres each in summer.

  • Friday

The Kairouan mosque closes earlier for prayer, so pick another day if you can.

How much do excursions from Hammamet cost?

Prices are per vehicle, not per person. For one to four travellers, a day starts at €45 for Friguia Park and goes up to €120 for Dougga and Bulla Regia. Larger groups pay more for a bigger car, but never per seat.

How far is El Jem from Hammamet?

El Jem is about 150 km south of Hammamet, roughly 1 h 45 on the A1 motorway. Most people combine it with Kairouan, which is 1 h 30 away. The full day takes about eight hours door to door.

Can you see Carthage and Sidi Bou Said in one day?

Yes, easily. They are about ten minutes apart, so the half day covers both and gets you back by 12:45. The full day adds the Tunis medina and returns around 15:00.

Can you visit the Sahara from Hammamet in a day?

Not really. Douz and the dunes are about 6 hours each way, so a real Sahara trip needs at least two days with a night in the desert. For a single day, Kairouan and El Jem give you the best of inland Tunisia.

Are entry tickets and lunch included?

No. You pay tickets on site, usually around 12 dinars per site, and your driver shows you where. Lunch is at your own cost, which means you choose where and how much to spend.

Is the driver also a guide?

Our drivers know the roads and the sites, but they are not licensed guides. If you want a full guided visit, we can add a licensed local guide to any day for a fee.

Is Hammamet safe for day trips?

Hammamet and the main tourist sites see millions of visitors a year and are generally calm. Still, check the latest UK government travel advice for Tunisia before you go. Travelling with a private driver also means you never wait at a station or a roadside.

Is it cheaper to book Hammamet excursions at the hotel?

Usually not for two or more people. Hotel desks sell coach seats per person, often €55 to €100 each, while our price covers the whole car. Four people to El Jem pay €90 in total with us.

Can we stay longer at the sites?

Yes. On every full-day excursion you can take more time at each stop and be dropped back at your hotel as late as 18:00. Just tell us when you book, or add it in the notes of the booking form.
