Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour With the Tunis Medina

This Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour packs three of Tunisia’s best sights into one private day: the Tunis medina, the Roman ruins of Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Hammamet, Sousse or Tunis. You pay one price for the car, not per person.

How the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour Runs

The Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour follows the clock, not the postcard. You start in the Tunis medina while the souks are cool and quiet. Carthage fills the middle of the day, and your driver takes you from one part of the site to the next, so you walk less in the heat. Sidi Bou Said comes last, so you finish on a café terrace above the sea. If you pick the 09:00 start, every time below moves one hour later.

Stop 1

Stop 1: The Tunis Medina, a UNESCO Old Town

The medina of Tunis holds about 700 monuments inside a maze of covered lanes. At its heart stands the Zitouna Mosque, founded in the 8th century. You arrive as the shutters go up, so the souks are calm and the craftsmen are already at work. Your driver drops you at one gate and waits at another, so you never walk back the same way.

  • Perfume, carpet and chechia souks, still run by craft families
  • Avenue Habib Bourguiba and its colonial façades, a few steps away

Stop 2

Stop 2: Carthage Ruins, From Byrsa Hill to the Antonine Baths

Carthage was Rome’s great rival until 146 BC, when Rome burned it and later rebuilt it as a Roman city. Today the ruins are spread over several separate areas. That is why this part of the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour is driven, not walked: your driver takes you from gate to gate. One ticket, about 12 dinars, covers every area on the same day.

What you’ll see

  • Antonine Baths on the seafront, the largest Roman baths in Africa
  • Byrsa Hill, the heart of Punic Carthage, with a view over the gulf
  • The Punic ports, once the base of Carthage’s war fleet
  • The Tophet, a Punic sanctuary dug up since the 19th century

Stop 3

Stop 3: Sidi Bou Said, the Blue-and-White Village

Sidi Bou Said sits on a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis. White walls, blue doors and bougainvillea line every lane. The village takes about an hour on foot, or longer if you stop at Café des Nattes or the ceramic shops. It is also the best place for lunch, on a terrace with a sea view. Want more time here? Our half-day Sidi Bou Said trip is built around the village alone.

Tips Before Your Tunis Day Trip

Four small things make the day easier. Most of them come down to walking, heat and the calendar.

  • Wear closed shoes

You walk 3 to 4 km over the day, on medina cobbles and Carthage gravel.

  • Cover shoulders and knees

Nobody checks in the souks, but you need it near the Zitouna Mosque.

  • Pick your day

Sunday has light traffic, but part of the souks is closed. Saturday is the best balance.

  • Go in spring or autumn

April to June and September to November stay at 18 to 28 °C. In July and August, leave at 08:00.

Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and Tunis: Common Questions

Straight answers on timing, tickets, clothing and children.

How long is the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour?

About 7 hours door to door from Hammamet. That is one hour of driving each way and about 4 h 30 at the three stops. From Tunis allow one hour less, and from Sousse one hour more.

How much does a Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour cost?

€80 per car for 1 to 4 people from Hammamet, €70 from Tunis and €130 from Sousse or Port El Kantaoui. The price covers the car, fuel, tolls and the driver. The Carthage ticket, about 12 dinars, is extra.

Is Carthage worth visiting?

Yes, if you know what to expect. Carthage is not one big site like Pompeii but several smaller ones spread across a seaside suburb. The Antonine Baths and the view from Byrsa Hill are the highlights, and a driver makes them easy to link.

Can I add the Bardo Museum?

Yes, in place of the medina or with less time in Carthage. The Bardo needs at least 1 h 30 and sits west of the centre. Tell us when you book, and the driver will reorder the stops.

Do I need a guide at Carthage?

No. You can visit freely with one ticket for all areas. Your driver explains the basics on the way but is not a licensed guide. We can add an official guide if you ask 48 hours ahead.

Is the day good for children?

Yes, as long as they can walk a fair bit. The medina comes first, while everyone is fresh, and kids usually love the Antonine Baths and the lanes of Sidi Bou Said. Child seats are free on request.

What is the best time of year to go?

April to June and September to November. The weather is mild and the light on the white walls of Sidi Bou Said is softer. In midsummer, choose the 08:00 start.
