Sousse and Monastir Day Trip With Port El Kantaoui

This Sousse and Monastir day trip follows the Sahel coast, with short hops between its three towns. You start at the marina of Port El Kantaoui, explore the UNESCO medina and ribat of Sousse, then finish at the seafront ribat of Monastir. A private driver picks you up at your hotel, and you pay one price for the car, not per person.

How the Sousse and Monastir Day Trip Runs

The Sousse and Monastir day trip runs north to south along one stretch of coast. From Hammamet it takes about 1 h 15 to get there, then no drive between stops takes more than 20 minutes. You start gently at Port El Kantaoui, reach the Sousse medina before the tour groups arrive and keep Monastir for the afternoon. Because the drives are so short, the plan bends easily: spend longer in one place and the driver simply trims another.

Stop 1

Stop 1: Port El Kantaoui, the Marina

Port El Kantaoui is a resort built in the 1970s in the style of an Andalusian village. Its car-free marina is lined with white houses, cafés and hundreds of boats. An hour is enough for a coffee by the water and a walk around the harbour. It is the easiest stop of the day, and the one children like best.

Stop 2: The Sousse Medina and Its Ribat

The medina of Sousse is on the UNESCO list and still lived in, not a showcase. A narrow staircase takes you up the ribat of 821 to a watchtower above the whole port. Next door, the Great Mosque looks more like a fort than a place of prayer, because the coast faced constant raids. Then the Kasbah museum shows some of the finest Roman mosaics in Tunisia.

Stop 3

Stop 3: The Monastir Ribat and Bourguiba Mausoleum

The ribat of Monastir, built in 796, stands right at the water’s edge. You can climb to its terraces, and its walls have appeared in films such as Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Next to it, the Bourguiba Mausoleum and its golden domes tell the story of Tunisia’s first president. The area is flat and compact, which makes for an easy end to the day.

Tips for Your Sahel Coast Day

Two medinas, two ribats and a lot of stairs. Here is what to plan for.

  • Expect narrow stairs

The Sousse watchtower is reached by a tight spiral staircase. The ribat courtyard is open to everyone.

  • Dress modestly

The Great Mosque and the ribats ask for covered shoulders and knees. A light scarf or sarong is enough.

  • Wear good shoes

Both medinas are cobbled from end to end.

  • Make it your first day

Short hops between three towns give you a good feel for Tunisia before you head further inland.

Sousse, Monastir and Port El Kantaoui: Common Questions

What the day covers, what it costs and who it suits.

What does the Sousse and Monastir day trip include?

Three coastal towns: the marina of Port El Kantaoui, the medina, ribat and museum of Sousse, then the ribat and Bourguiba Mausoleum in Monastir. Count about 8 h 30 door to door from Hammamet, with about 2 h 30 of that on the road, or about 6 h 30 from Sousse.

How much does a Sousse and Monastir day trip cost?

€90 per car for 1 to 4 people from Hammamet or Sousse, and €140 from Tunis. The price covers the car, fuel and the driver. Monument tickets, about 8 dinars each, are paid on site.

Is it suitable for people with limited mobility?

Partly. Port El Kantaoui and the Monastir seafront are flat and easy. The Sousse watchtower has a narrow spiral staircase and the medinas are cobbled. Tell us, and the driver will adapt the route.

Can it be done as a half day?

Yes. Keep Sousse and Monastir and drop Port El Kantaoui, for about four hours at the sites. Message us on WhatsApp with your hotel for a price.

Was the Monastir ribat used in films?

Yes, several times. Its walls appear in Monty Python’s Life of Brian and in Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth.

When is the Sousse medina quietest?

Before 11:00, before the hotel groups arrive. That is why we visit Sousse in mid-morning and keep Port El Kantaoui as a short first stop.
